Authorities worked hours to remove submerged pickup from Cozumel water

Police, firemen, a tow truck driver and numerous islanders participated in the removal of the vehicle after it was located fully submerged. The mishap took place when the driver of the pickup was attempting to pull a boat out of the water and up the ramp.

According to Alfredo Arellano Villaseñor, the Director of Civil Protection, Firefighters, and Lifeguards of Cozumel, the driver of the truck was at the base of the ramp on wet concrete and moss. His wheels began to spin on the slippery surface and the truck ended up in the sea.

He explained that the maintenance of the ramp to remove the moss is the responsibility of the Integral Port Administration of Quintana Roo (Apiqroo) and the Harbor Master’s Office. He noted that several vehicles have already ended up in the sea in the last three years for this reason.

The large group of people were at the ramp for several hours Monday night working to realign it with the ramp to it could be pulled. The white pickup was eventually hooked up to a tow truck and pulled free from the water. Arellano Villaseñor did not mention any possible charges or fines to the driver of the truck.
