Puerto Morelos, Q.R. — Municipal authorities of Puerto Morelos continue patrolling beach areas in search of illegal beach vendors. The patrols were started in May at the request of citizens. Personnel from Zofemat, Municipal Inspection and Citizen Security continue monitoring beaches from the Fishermen’s Pier to The Fives Hotel in search of the illegal sellers.

According to Aimée Regina Rodríguez Vivas, the Secretary of Environment, Animal Welfare and Sustainable Mobility, the patrols are being carried out in order to ensure compliance with regulations in the coastal area
She says personnel are looking to maintain order and security for those visiting the municipality’s beaches. The purpose, she said, is to ensure compliance with the law which prohibits informal sales on beaches since the beach areas are federal.
“Those who come to sell their products are encouraged to contact City Hall to request relocation to a municipal area that has the proper permits for them to sell,” she explained.
“The government of Mayor Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz has consistently supported producers and artisans and welcomes all those who seek a living every day. Therefore, during this year, we kindly urge them to regularize their commercial activities and move to spaces where they can develop them,” she stated.
The latest surveillance operation was led by the Aimée Regina Rodríguez Vivas along with the head of Inspection, Antonio Hernández, Zofemat member Emmanuel Tuz Betancourt and members of Citizen Security.

During the tour from the beach access located next to The Fives Hotel to the Fishermen’s Wharf, Zofemat inspectors identified and approached several people to explain the law prohibiting commercial activities in that area. The people then left the beach after speaking with authorities.
“Authorities reiterated that it is important to contact the Inspection Department to discuss options for selling their merchandise and even seek opportunities through government programs that can help them grow their economy or business,” Rodríguez Vivas explained.

Local authorities reiterated the importance of enforcing the law in the coastal zone where street vending is prohibited. The program to locate illegal selling on Puerto Morelos beaches began in May in response to citizen requests. An initial team of 14 public servants monitored the municipality’s federal beach areas to address the situation.
