Puerto Morelos, Q.R. — Patrols to address street vendors on Puerto Morelos beaches began Wednesday. An intial 14 public servants monitored the municipality’s federal beach areas to address the situation. The public servants began monitoring in response to requests.

“In response to reports from various sectors, personnel from the Directorate of Inspection and the Federal Maritime-Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat) began to patrol the municipality’s beaches to address the situation of street vendors,” commented Mayor Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz.
“We want to ensure compliance with the law, strengthen security and maintain a positive image. Street vending is not permitted by law,” she said. “During my administration, no permit has been granted for this activity on the beaches which are part of the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone.”
On Wednesday, 14 public servants participated in the first operation of the year. Of those, four were from the Inspection Department led by Director Antonio Hernández and four were from Zofemat, under the direction of Emmanuel Tuz Betancourt.
Six public servants were Citizen Security officer, led by Joaquín Poot Acosta, the Director of the Municipal Police and Citizen Security.

The first patrol began at the Fisherman’s Wharf to The Fives Hotel where, along the way, a street vendor was encountered. According to Merari, “the situation was explained in a friendly manner and they understood the rules without any problems.”
She says the patrol operations will continue on different days with the goal of keeping the beaches free of street vendors.
