Authorities collect over 4 kilos of medical waste reported dumped in green area

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Health authorities in Playa del Carmen collected over four kilos of medical waste that had been tossed into the trees. Municipal personnel from the Quintana Roo Health Secretariat (Sesa) were made aware of the garbage through a citizen report Friday.

In coordination with state and municipal authorities of Playa del Carmen, authorities immediately responded to the discovery of medical waste found thrown in a public space.

“The garbage was located on a vacant lot in the vicinity of Paseo Central and Petempich Avenue, where approximately four kilos of sharp waste was collected and transported,” Sesa reported.

“These were secured in accordance with current regulations and transferred to the General Hospital of Playa del Carmen for confinement in the area of Hazardous Biological-Infectious Waste (RPBI), under the corresponding protocols,” they explained.

The medical waste was found by a citizen Friday. January 9, 2026.

During the visual inspection, vacutainer-type tubes containing blood, used syringes, hypodermic needles and items used for intravenous infusions were found without labels, records or data that would allow their origin to be identified.

Additionally, only the lid of a red biohazardous waste container was located. The complete container was missing.

Elements of the Municipal Police, Civil Protection, the State Attorney General’s Office, as well as personnel from the Coordination of Protection against Sanitary Risks, participated in carrying out the work of securing, collecting and transferring the waste in safe conditions.

The Quintana Roo Health Secretariat reiterates its commitment to the responsible management of healthcare waste and strict compliance with established health regulations.

The agency said they are also working with the relevant authorities who are already investigating the origin of these materials with the aim of identifying the causes and determining responsibility.

“Medical facilities and those generating medical waste are urged to reinforce the responsible handling of these materials. The public is also asked to report any findings that pose a health risk so that immediate and coordinated action can be taken.”
