Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Although it is still hurricane season, the state of Quintana Roo has already begun to experience cool winter air. A mass of cold air from the U.S. is forecast to reach the state late Tuesday, bringing with it two possible days of rain.

According to Mexico’s National Meteorological Service (SMN), today, cold front no. 12 will extend, with stationary characteristics, over the Bay of Campeche and the Yucatán Peninsula.
The mass of cold air will interact with tropical wave 40, which is approaching Quintana Roo, causing rainfall and thunderstorms along the coast including northern and eastern Yucatán and northern Quintana Roo.
The cold air mass associated with cold front 12 will create cool conditions. The SMN reports that a very strong north wind will prevail with gusts of 70 to 80 km/h in the Isthmus and Gulf of Tehuantepec as well as northerly winds with gusts of 40 to 55 km/h along the coasts of southern Veracruz, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán and Quintana Roo.

Those winds are expected to diminish in the afternoon.
Quintana Roo meteorologist Erika Ramírez Méndez says “it is important to dress warmly and take care during the low temperatures since these systems cause an abrupt temperature change.
“We have a projection of 48 cold fronts for this season,” she said. Mexico is currently on its twelfth cold front.

In September, Fabián Vázquez Romaña, the General Coordinator of the Servicio Meteorológico Nacional (SMN), reported the arrival of 48 cold fronts for Mexico this winter season with nearly half reaching the Yucatan Peninsula.
