Approximately 10,000 jobs will resume with June 8 reopening of hotels

Cancun, Q.R. — The president of the Hotel Association of Cancun, Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres, Roberto Cintrón reported that on June 8, 74 hotels will resume operations, which will represent the return of around 10,000 jobs.

He says that of the 74 hotels, 64 are affiliate hotels and 10 on the island of Cozumel, whose initial occupation rate will be somewhere between 10 and 15 percent. He says as occupation rates increase, the return of the remainder of the workforce will also increase. He noted that as of now, 173 hotels remain shut.

He explained that the workers returning on June 1 will be mostly in operational areas such as cleaning, chamber maids, kitchens staff, maintenance and reception, and that by June 8, these hotels will be ready to begin receiving tourists.

Initially, the state will focus on promoting its tourism reactivation to nationals who are more likely to drive rather than fly to their vacation destination. Some of the hotels expected to reopen for June 8 are the larger chains such as Mayakobá, Marriot, Barceló, Vidanta, Catalonia, Maroma, Dreams, El Dorado, Princess, Palladium, Hilton, Princess and Iberostar. Smaller hotels will reopen July 1 once tourism has generated the demand.
