Mahahual, Q.R. — The Mexican Navy rescued three people after a small boat capsized off the coast of Mahahual, in southern Quintana Roo. The three adults were rescued from the sea by the Secretaría de Marina (Semar) Tuesday in response to a distress call.
Semar who acts as Mexico’s Coast Guard, were deployed from the Chetumal Naval Search, Rescue and Maritime Surveillance Station in response to receiving a distress call alerting them to a capsized vessel approximately one nautical mile south of the port of Mahahual.
“Two American tourists and the boat’s captain were adrift after the incident,” they reported in a statement late Wednesday.

“A Defender-class vessel with naval personnel specializing in search and rescue operations was immediately dispatched. They located the crew members and brought them to a safe port.
“Once ashore, naval medical personnel conducted a medical evaluation, confirming that all three were in good health, and therefore, their transfer to a hospital was not necessary,” Semar said in a statement.
While Semar did not say how the boat capsized, strong winds have been felt in the region with the arrival of three back-to-back cold fronts during the past week. It is not known if the two Americans boat passengers are residents or area visitors.
