Cancun, Q.R. — Three men accused of firing rounds at a Cancun taxi station to pressure drivers to pay extortion money have been charged. The State Attorney General (FGE) says Pablo Eduardo “N”, Rolando “N” and Maikel “N” are being investigated for aggravated extortion.
“The events for which they are being investigated occurred on September 9 of this year, when they arrived at the sub-headquarters of the Luis Donaldo Colosio Murrieta Taxi Drivers Union to demand weekly payments” the FGE said.
The three men were demanding the payments from a group of taxi operators in SM 70 for the concept of “floor rights”, authorities explained.
“As a pressure measure, the now accused Pablo Eduardo “N”, Rolando “N” and Maikel “N”, on September 21, fired several shots at the facade of the Taxi Drivers’ Union,” they reported.
Following a complaint filed by the victims, the FGE requested and obtained the corresponding arrest warrant from a judge, and the suspects were captured, they said. All three have been charged with aggravated extortion and ordered to remain in pretrial detention on them for a term of two years or the duration of the judicial proceedings.
Last week, two men accused of obtaining a city taxi driver list then using it for extortion purposes were also charged. Police say Jesús Alberto “N” and Juan Luis “N” were charged with aggravated extortion after physically assaulting an office worker to obtain the list of city taxi driver names.
That list was then used to extort the drivers. Police said the pair was caught “in flagrante delicto” and taken into custody.
