Pair charged with aggravated extortion of Cancun city taxi drivers

Cancun, Q.R. — Two men accused of obtaining a city taxi driver list then using it for extortion purposes have been charged. Police say Jesús Alberto “N” and Juan Luis “N” have been charged with aggravated extortion after physically assaulting an office worker to obtain the list of city taxi driver names.

That list was then used to extort the drivers. Police said the pair was caught “in flagrante delicto” and taken into custody.

“The defendants are identified as Jesús Alberto “N” and Juan Luis “N”, who are being investigated for events that occurred on the morning of September 9 of this year, when they allegedly showed up at one of the sub-offices of the transport union “Lic. Luis Donaldo Colosio M, Leona Vicario”, located in Supermanzana 70, where the two male victims were,” they reported.

“One of the now-indicted assailants hit one of the victims and insulted them, demanding they hand over the taxi list and the name of the taxi driver’s boss, before leaving the scene.

“That same day, one of the victims received a phone call telling them they had to pay 400 pesos for each car and 500 pesos for each union van. After a discussion, the two parties agreed to pay 200 pesos per vehicle, with the understanding that if they refused, the vehicles would be shot at and set on fire.

“On the afternoon of September 12, one of the two victims was driving his taxi when he received a call from an unknown number, which he didn’t answer. Minutes later, a colleague called him and informed him that they had called to tell him they would come and shoot and set fire to the vehicles.

“On September 16, the suspects met with the victims in SM 63 to make a payment when one of the victims shouted for help and police officers approached, who proceeded to arrest Jesús Alberto “N” and Juan Luis “N” in flagrante delicto,” they said.

During their hearing, both were charged and ordered to pretrial detention for a term of two years or the duration of the judicial proceedings.
