Aged infrastructure blamed for latest PDC power failure

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Wear and tear has been the said cause of another power failure in Playa del Carmen. On Tuesday evening, part of the city was left without electricity for nearly three hours.

A medium-voltage fault, caused by aged infrastructure, left a section of the city without power, reported Luis Herrera Quiam, the Secretary General of the City Council on Wednesday.

He said the power failure affected Plaza Las Américas, Selvanova and Misión del Carmen. The blackout left businesses stranded and disabled traffic lights on major avenues such as 125th and 115th, causing congestion.

The lights were out for approximately three hours Tuesday night.

Citizens in other areas of Pedregal, Cruz de Servicios and nearby neighborhoods also reported power outages that started in the afternoon.

According to Herrera Quiam the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) addressed the outage and worked on the gradual restoration of service. Power was restored in most areas by 9:00 p.m.

He said the CFE (Comisión Federal de Electricidad) electrical failure was due to old infrastructure that needed to be replaced.

The outage lasted approximately three hours and caused disruptions to urban mobility, generating traffic chaos that was managed by the Transit Department.
