Afternoon fire consumes native wood frame and grass topped home

Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Q.R. — A wood frame and grass topped home in the town of Trapich was consumed by a fire Monday. Neighbors tried to help the homeowner put out the fast spreading flames but were no match for the strong gusts of wind.

The two-part structure was destroyed by the fire Monday afternoon in the small Mayan community of Trapich in the municipality of Felipe Carrillo Puerto.

The house was home to a mother and her two young girls aged six and one. Everything inside the home was also destroyed during the afternoon blaze.

Neighbors were unable to save the home from being consumed by fire Monday February 2, 2026.

The home was built from dried sticks and palapa grass and took only minutes to burn. Personnel from nearby emergency services did not provide a possible cause for the fire.

The municipality of Felipe Carrillo Puerto was recorded as the coldest in the state Monday morning with a February 2 wakeup temperature of 4.2C (39F).
