2.7 billion peso corridor road project started to connect Cancun with Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — A 2.7 billion peso roadway expansion project to connect López Portillo Avenue with Costa Mujeres is set to begin. Construction to connect the Cancun avenue with the mainland hotel area of Isla Mujeres is scheduled to start April 9.

José Alberto Alonso Ovando, head of the Secretariat of Sustainable Urban Territorial Development (Sedetus), says work will begin to expand the first seven kilometers of the 25 planned.

According to Alonso Ovando, the first four kilometers will require only minor adjustments, however, the latter three will require more intense work to connect one of the fastest growing areas in the state.

The segment being started April 9 extends from López Portillo to Playa Mujeres. The remaining three kilometers are located within Costa Mujeres (in the municipality of Isla Mujeres) and will require additional expansion work to integrate that road into the new corridor.

“There are 25.4 kilometers in total. Wednesday we’ll start with seven kilometers, some of which only need sidewalks, lighting, or minor adjustments,” explained Alonso Ovando.

Alonso Ovando says the most complex section of the project is approximately nine kilometers and still requires an Environmental Impact Assessment. The technical study is underway, and if necessary, adjustments will be made to the infrastructure design to avoid ecological impacts in coordination with the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat), he said.

The road or new corridor will connect the main vein of Cancun’s López Portillo Avenue with the hotel area of the Isla Mujeres mainland. The finished 25.4 kilometer project will significantly reduce travel time in addition to improving urban connectivity.

The project was first announced in October of 2024 by Governor Mara Lezama. At the time she said the construction of the new Cancun-Costa Mujeres Tourist Boulevard, a 25 kilometer stretch of roadway, will require an investment of more than 2.7 billion pesos and create more than 500 jobs.
