Volunteers plant 500 shrubs to reforest Playa Delfines dune in Cancun Hotel Zone

Cancun, Q.R. — Shrubs have been planted on the coastal dune of the Playa Delfines Protected Natural Area. The sand thriving shrubs were planted Saturday as part of the city’s reforestation program.

In a collaboration with federal authorities, private sector and organized civil society, Mayor Ana Paty Peralta led the reforestation of 500 kidney-shaped shrubs on the coastal dune of the Playa Delfines Protected Natural Area.

The program is the first stage of the ecological restoration of the site in order to help mitigate erosion in the sand dunes.

“Our dunes are fundamental to preserving our beaches. The commitment is to always work together and do things better. These are actions related to caring for the environment, which is emblematic of our city,” she said.

The Mayor thanked the combined efforts of more than 80 volunteers from the Ecology and Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat) departments, the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (CONANP), Public Services, the Palace Foundation, PROREST security guards and CAFU Gym.

A total of 80 people volunteered to plant the coastal dune shrubs Saturday November 22, 2025.

Mayor Peralta said that the “Arboriza Cancún” program is still in place in the city with the goal of planting more than 11,000 trees throughout the administration to help all citizens care for nature.

Fernando Haro Salinas, the Director of Municipal Ecology, highlighted that in 2023, the Government of Mexico declared this beach, which consists of three polygons, as a Protected Natural Area.

He said that this authority initiated the Program for the Protection and Restoration of Priority Ecosystems and Species (PROREST), to carry out these conservation activities continuously.

José Arturo González González, head of the Nichupté Mangrove Flora and Fauna Protection Area of CONANP, also emphasized that while this beach is important for the people of Cancun, it is also important for tourists, which is why the strategies are focused on generating its resilience.

Approximately 500 shrubs were planted during the reforestation program on Playa Delfines.

Additional reforestation is planned for the same area to help avoid erosion.
