Cancun, Q.R. — The up-and-coming Cancun Nichupté vehicular bridge is expected to be operational by November. The date was announced during a weekend visit by President Claudia Sheinbaum.

Sheinbaum toured the bridge project with Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa and Guadalupe Phillips of ICA, the company constructing the bridge. Sheinbaum oversaw the progress being made on the construction of the Nichupté vehicular bridge as part of a working tour that began in Cancun.
“It’s a bridge that began under President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and it’s up to us to finish it,” she said. “It’s an 11.2-kilometer circuit and one of the longest bridges over the lagoon in Latin America,” said Sheinbaum.
According to information provided to Claudia Sheinbaum, the physical construction is now 77.8 percent complete. The bridge over the lagoon will be 8.8 kilometers long with three lanes, one of which will be reversible. The bridge will also have a metal arch.

Once operational, it will save 45 minutes in travel time from Kukulcán Boulevard in the Cancun Hotel Zone to Bonanpak Avenue in the city center. It will also be an important evacuation route in the event of natural disasters.

Governor Mara Lezama said that the project not only represents a structure, but also gives workers the opportunity to get home faster and enjoy time with their families.
President Claudia Sheinbaum, during the supervisory tour, explained that a construction system is used to protect the mangroves as they work from above rather than below. This also protects the environment.

She said the Nichupté vehicular bridge project is expected to be completed by November.
