Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Local authorities are asking for assistance from the U.S. Consulate after a missing American woman was found. The woman’s family, who reported her missing, also reported her found but will not provide proof.
Authorities from the Quintana Roo Missing Persons Commission says they are being forced to involve the U.S. Consulate to ensure the woman is alive.
According to Haydé Saldaña Martínez, who heads the Commission, the family of the Indiana woman are refusing to cooperate with authorities. She says after a missing person is reported as being found, the Commission requires proof of life to deactivate the missing persons report.

Saldaña Martínez says that’s where the family refuses to cooperate.
She explained that a woman from Indiana was reported missing earlier this week. Her agency issued a missing person alert and cooperated with the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE), which is standard procedure.
The woman has since been reported found by her family. To deactivate the alert and comply with legal protocols, the family was asked for proof of life, which they refused.
Haydé Saldaña Martínez says they even went as far as to ask the Commission not to contact them again.
“We will have to go to the consulate to resolve this issue, something has happened to us before,” she said. “They say the person has been located but they haven’t provided proof of life which is very important.”
Saldaña Martínez says as an official body, they cannot rely solely on statements from family members, that they must verify that the person is alive and well.
