Two fired for corruption: Tulum mayor announces internal reviews of municipal administration and police officers

Tulum, Q.R. — Two Tulum city hall officials have been removed from their positions on allegations of corruption. Tulum Mayor Diego Castañón Trejo said two inspectors from the Fiscalization (tax) Department were let go on grounds of extortion.

According to Castañón Trejo, the decision was made as part of internal reviews by the municipal administration following numerous reports by citizens and business owners.

He made the announcement Tuesday during his press conference, Tulum Communicates and Moves Forward.

He also announced actions to strengthen the professionalization of law enforcement and reiterated his commitment to maintaining a zero-tolerance policy toward any act of extortion.

He clarified that the investigation will not be limited Inspections, adding that municipal transit officers will also be reviewed, an area that continues to receive complaints of abuse.

Transit officer reviews were announced by the mayor after numerous social media complaints about travelers being stopped on their way to the Tulum airport. On line complaints describe irregular charges, threats of fines, and what they consider excessive inspections by police officers.

During his Tuesday press conference, he announced that 130 officers will begin a Human Rights Course, 19 will complete their Initial Training, and 59 more will participate in a Basic Skills workshop.

The courses, he said, are part of a comprehensive strategy to improve the quality of service provided by Tulum police.

“We want you to know that we, as the government, will not tolerate any officer who engages in extortion. I urge anyone who is a victim of this type of crime to report it to us.
