Two dozen settlers block Mahahual cruise ship pier in protest

Mahahual, Q.R. — A group of approximately two dozen settlers from a nearby community protested in Mahahual yesterday. The group, who live in an irregular community, said they wanted their community regularized.

The group also wanted their roads repaired by the new port owners, Royal Caribbean.

Residents of the irregular Nuevo Mahahual community blocked the Costa Maya cruise pier Thursday morning. The group arrived with signs demanding that the Royal Caribbean fulfill its commitments to rehabilitate and improve roads and public services.

At the same time, they also demanded that municipal authorities regularize their community. With banners in hand, the small group protested their dissatisfaction with the deteriorated streets and lack public lighting, security and garbage collection.

The group blocked the area Thursday morning February 12, 2026.

The group planned the protest on the day when three cruise ships docked at the Mahahual Costa Maya port. Disembarked tourists were unable to walk past the protestors.

They refused to leave until they were attended to by someone from Royal Caribbean.

The group stayed, demanding that the Royal Caribbean and the Othón P. Blanco city council fulfill their promises to rehabilitate streets and provide public services as well as the start of the legal process for the regularization of the Nuevo Mahahual neighborhood.

There was no public comment made by either side.
