Tulum, Q.R. — Marina personnel are gearing up to install anti-sargassum barriers along the coast of Tulum. To date, beach cleaning staff have removed more than 440 tons by hand. Equipment for the coastal installation began arriving in late March, however, authorities are still waiting for the remaining pieces.

The first of the equipment arrived March 28th. Marina personnel are still waiting for the rest of the equipment and tools needed to begin the process.
A total of 1.5 kilometers of anti-sargassum barriers are planned for the municipality of Tulum. The barriers will be place to cover the coast from Mangle Beach to Playa Santa Fe.
In recent weeks, the volume of sargassum has been particularly noticeable in Tulum, overwhelming the Zofemat (Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone) workers who manually clear the sargassum each day.
According to Tulum Zofemat, 443 tons of sargassum has already been collected by hand so far this year.

Last week, Tulum Mayor Diego Castañón Trejo delivered four ATVs to Zofemat staff as part of an initiative to provide the necessary tools to ensure beach cleaning.

Zofemat Director Juan Antonio Garza said the ATVs will help workers remove the sargassum more efficiently. “These ATVs will be used for surveillance and support in the sargassum cleanup,” he said.
