Tulum taxi corruption: Driver reported for demanding 1,200 pesos for 3 kilometer ride

Tulum, Q.R. — A woman who was forced from a ride share car into to Tulum taxi then overcharged reported the driver. On Sunday, 26 year old Alejandra “N” called police after a Tulum taxi driver wanted 1,200 pesos for a cab ride from the Tulum Hotel Zone to Aldea Zama, a ride of less than three kilometers.

According to her police report, she was in the process of getting into a ride share car in the Tulum Hotel Zone when she was intercepted by several Tulum taxi drivers who told her only they were operating in that area.

She was then directed by those same taxi drivers to a cab for her ride home. Once she arrived at residential Aldea Zama, approximately 1.5 miles later, the driver asked for 1,200 pesos. She refused to pay the amount at which the driver became aggressive. She called police.

Once the Tulum cab driver realized police had been called, he settled on a 400.00 peso payment and left before authorities arrived.

In an official statement, the SSC of Tulum said “following a report received through the Línea Contigo emergency number, officers from this agency responded to a call in the Aldea Zama area of Tulum.

“At the scene, they interviewed Alejandra “N”, a 26-year-old Colombian national, who stated the following: While in the hotel zone, she attempted to board a ride-hailing vehicle, however, a group of taxi drivers prevented her from using the service, arguing that they were the only ones operating in the area.

“The same taxi drivers then directed her to a vehicle that would take her home.

“Upon arrival, the driver demanded payment of 1,200.00 Mexican pesos, an amount the victim refused to pay. The taxi driver then became violent towards her, prompting her to request assistance from law enforcement.

“Finally, the operator accepted the payment of $400.00 pesos and left the scene before the police arrived. Citizens and visitors are urged to report any abuse or violent behavior to the emergency number,” the Secretaría de Seguridad Pública y Protección Ciudadana de Tulum said.

The state’s Instituto de Movilidad del Estado de Quintana Roo (Imoveqroo) who oversees public transportation services, has not commented on the Sunday Tulum taxi driver incident. Tulum police did not say if they are following up or searching for the overcharging driver.
