Tulum sets White Flag beach certification goal to promote sustainability

Tulum, Q.R. — The municipality of Tulum is looking to have at least one more of its beaches certified Platinum. They are also going for White Flag certification on three other municipal beaches.

Juan Antonio Garza, Municipal Director of the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat), says the goal is to establish the municipality as a sustainable and safe tourist destination. He says Zofemat (Zona Federal Marítimo Terrestre) is hoping to add one more Platinum certification and upgrade three others to White flags during 2025.

“We are working to ensure that Tulum’s beaches have bathrooms, drinking fountains, lifeguard towers, and rest areas, thus ensuring a safe and comfortable experience for tourists,” Garza said.

A White Flag certified beach, or Certified Safe Marine Area (CSMA), is a beach that has been physically cleaned of plastic and other marine debris. It is seen as a commitment to a clean and pristine environment for both marine life and visitors.

He says during 2025, Zofemat is hoping to obtain a White Flag for Playas Pescadores, Maya and Santa Fe in the Parque Nacional Tulum. They are also hoping to Platinum-certify Playa Mangle, also in the Jaguar Park.

Garza explained that specific actions are being taken in order to comply with certification guidelines.

“We are working to ensure that Tulum’s beaches meet the highest national and international standards,” she said.

He says the municipality is reinforcing its commitment to preserving the natural environment and improving visitor experiences.

Last year, Tulum Mayor Diego Castañón Trejo received four platinum beach certifications. The formal presentation was made by Viviana Fernanda Camargo, Director General of the Mexican Institute for Standardization and Certification (IMEEC). The beaches recognized were Playa Santa Fe, Playa Maya, Playa Pescadores and Playa Aventuras in Akumal.
