Tulum, Q.R. — Tulum’s Security Secretariat Edgar Aguilar Rico says reports of an attack on the mayor “ is completely false”. He made the remark Wednesday after social media reports of an armed attack against Tulum Mayor Diego Castañón.

“The Tulum Secretariat of Public Security and Citizen Protection reports the information circulating on social media about an alleged attack on the mayor is false. The incident reported is completely isolated and has no relation to the activities our Mayor carried out today during his tour of the streets and avenues of Tulum.
“We reiterate our commitment to transparency and security. We encourage citizens to stay informed exclusively through official channels, avoiding the spread of rumors that generate unnecessary confusion and alarm,” the Secretaría de Seguridad Pública y Protección Ciudadana de Tulum reported Wednesday afternoon.
On Wednesday, three men were arrested by Tulum police after being found carrying a handgun. The arrests took place in an area where the mayor was getting into his own vehicle during his town tour
Aguilar Rico said what happened was a routine operation in which two passengers inside a taxi were found carrying a firearm. The taxi they were in was stopped a few meters from where the mayor was completing a supervisory patrol in the downtown area.
It was a completely separate incident and had nothing to do with the mayor, he said.
“It is completely false that there was an attempt on the mayor’s life. He was already getting into his vehicle when my officers detected two individuals acting suspiciously. Upon searching them, a firearm was seized and they were handed over to the Prosecutor’s Office,” he explained.

According to the official report, the two males were aboard a taxi that was stopped during a routine operation. During the stop, the two passengers began to act suspeciously.
During a preventive search, one of them was found to be carrying a handgun. Both passengers and the driver of the taxi were detained and taken to the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) in Tulum.
The secretary explained that the inspection was carried out in compliance with the law and that at no time was the safety of the mayor or citizens at risk.

“I want to be very clear. There was no attack. The mayor completed his tour normally and is continuing with his field work schedule as he has done in various neighborhoods,” Aguilar Rico reiterated.
