Tulum opens new legal Justice Centre for Women to care for victims of violence

Tulum, Q.R. — A new legal facility for women has been inaugurated in the town of Tulum. The new Justice Centre will provide psychological, legal and medical care to victims of violence. It will also offer a safe place for victims to file complaints.

The facility was inaugurated Monday by Governor Mara Lezama, State Attorney General Raciel López Salazar and Citlalli Hernández Mora, the Government of Mexico’s Secretary for Women.

Hernández Mora led the inauguration of the Justice Center for Women (CJM) in Tulum, a project that represents “a huge step in the fight against violence against women” in the state.

With an investment exceeding 48 million pesos, the new facility was designed to provide comprehensive care to female victims of violence. The Justice Centre offers professional support and an immediate institutional response.

During her speech, Governor Lezama emphasized that the goal is that “no woman should have to face violence alone.”

The new Tulum Justice Centre is the fourth in the state and joins those already existing in Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Chetumal. The state-wide network benefits more than 900,000 women, girls and adolescents.

Citlalli Hernández said that Quintana Roo is one of the states with the most Centres for women. “It is sad to acknowledge that when women decide to report violence they face closed doors or officials who minimize their pain,” she said.

She said this government is experiencing a special time, a time of great strength for women with the first female President Claudia Sheinbaum who has a firm, decisive and historic commitment to women, and in Quintana Roo, with the first female governor, Mara Lezama.

The new Women’s Justice Center will serve more than 242,000 women in the region, including residents of Tulum, Playa del Carmen, Cozumel, and Puerto Morelos. Its facilities will offer psychological, legal and medical services, as well as initiating investigations following a formal complaint.

The new facility was built with an emergency shelter, a children’s playroom, social support, job training and educational integration under a comprehensive approach oriented toward building lasting peace.

“To solve a problem, the first step is to recognize it,” she stated, noting that in Quintana Roo, more than 70% of women have experienced some type of violence throughout their lives and almost half have suffered some aggression in the last year.

During the event, Governor Lezama acknowledged the joint work of the State Attorney General’s Office, the Superior Court of Justice, the Women’s Secretariat, the Secretariat of Citizen Security, the DIF, the Health sector, Victim Assistance and the Tulum City Council, among others.
