At the Tulum Comunica y Avanza press conference, Mayor Castañón Trejo reported on the progress of several key issues for the municipality with an emphasis on restoring free access to Jaguar Park beaches.

He explained that agreements to open access to the beaches of Jaguar Park are moving forward and are being finalized with the support of the federal government. The final decisions regarding beach access, he stressed, will be made by the federal government.

He also said they continue to work on improving public services, reactivating tourism, strengthening security and promoting sporting and community events.

Castañón Trejo reported that several tours and numerous workshops have been held with federal and state authorities including the Secretary of Tourism, Josefina Rodríguez, Adolfo Héctor Tonatiuh Velasco Bernal, CEO of Grupo Mundo Maya of Jaguar Pak, as well as Governor Mara Lezama.

He said meetings have also been held with representatives from agencies such as Sedena (National Ministry of Tourism), Profepa (Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection) and Fonatur (National Development Fund) as well as local tour operators, hotels and Civil Protection to ensure inclusive and clean beaches.

Castañón Trejo commented that last week, he met with the federal Secretary of Tourism and the state secretary, Bernardo Cueto in Mexico City. Mexico’s secretary of tourism is expected to return to Tulum in coming days to meet with tour operators and eventually Civil Protection personnel.

On Monday, Tulum Civil Protection reported briefly on now-Tropical Storm Melissa. During the press conference, authorities said they were monitoring the storm for the “low probability of possible impact from Melissa.”

Possible impact from storm Melissa was also discussed during the Tulum press conference.

On Tuesday, Mayor Castañón Trejo provided a briefing of his own stating “in our weekly press conference, we highlighted how coordination between the three levels of government is bearing fruit for Tulum.

“I am proud that today we can say that we are moving forward together with a common goal: improving the experience of our tourists and ensuring real benefits for the people of Tulum.

“We continue working hand in hand with Governor Mara Lezama and the Secretary of Tourism, Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, listening to each sector and making decisions that respond to people’s needs.

“ZOFEMAT reports that our beaches are in excellent condition after the sargassum cleanup work, and in sports, preparations are underway for the 2025 Tulum Half Marathon, an event that brings together athletes, families and visitors from across the country. We will continue to manage with transparency, commitment, and unity.

“In addition, we discussed the low probability of impact from storm Melissa.”

Early Wednesday, Tropical Storm Melissa was updated to take on major hurricane status on its projected path of heading west into the Caribbean Sea next week. Melissa is expected to become a major hurricane by Monday morning.
