Cancun, Q.R. — Company Tren Maya has submitted an environmental impact statement to build an overpass over the federal highway. The request to construct a 15-kilometer-long bridge over the federal highway outside Cancun was submitted in late December.
According to their submitted document, the project consists of the construction of a 15.3 kilometer long road that will connect the federal 180 highway (Cancun Airport) with the federal 307 highway (Cancun to Playa del Carmen).
According to the Secretary of National Defense who submitted the request to build, the construction project also includes an access branch to the Tren Maya freight terminal.
“The project occupies a total area of 115,023 hectares of which 68,512 hectares correspond to forest vegetation (medium-height semi-evergreen forest), thus requiring a change of land use in forest areas (CUSTF),” the submitted document reads.
“The main works include a 1,160-meter viaduct over the Maya Train line, the 1,200-meter Huayacán Bridge, vehicular overpasses, at-grade and grade-separated interchanges, as well as stormwater drainage works.

“This project envisions the construction of new road infrastructure that will serve as an extension of Huayacán Avenue, establishing a strategic connection between the Cancún–Airport branch of Federal Highway 180 and Federal Highway 307, specifically the Cancún–Playa del Carmen section.
“This project is located in a high-traffic logistics area, near the Cancún International Airport, giving it priority functional value within the regional mobility system.
“The project’s implementation will optimize traffic flow by decongesting existing roads, substantially reducing travel times, and improving the operational efficiency of intercity traffic. In particular, it will facilitate direct access to the new freight terminal (railway), strengthening key logistics links in the region.
The project represents a significant capital investment for the region, estimated at just over 3.1 billion pesos. This itemized budget includes:
● 2,750,000,000.00 allocated to the main construction activities.
● 215,460,000.00 for necessary induced works (relocation of CFE power lines).
● 66,914,594.00 specifically earmarked for the implementation of Environmental Programs, demonstrating a commitment to impact mitigation.
● 77,500,000.00 estimated for the Environmental Bond and 11,130,053.90 for studies and fees.

“Additionally, the Project will act as a catalyst for local economic growth by promoting the movement of goods and people, encouraging investment in logistics, commerce, and tourism sectors, and consolidating the region’s position as a key connectivity hub in southeastern Mexico,” Tren Maya said in their document.
