Riviera Maya, Q.R. — In addition to promoting tourism, the new section of Maya Train that runs from Cancun to Playa del Carmen will contribute to the mobility of the local population, reported the General Dirctor of Tren Maya.
Óscar David Lozano Águila, the General Director of the Tren Maya company, says workers from Riviera Maya along with national and international tourists will benefit from the route.
During its preopening phase, the Maya Train will offer 10 departure times per day, six commercial and four special, the latter of which to serve to local workers.
The tourist service will have daily departures at 9:00, 12:00 and 15:00 from Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen. From Playa del Carmen to the Cancun Airport, at 10:30 a.m., 1:30 and 4:30 p.m., passing through the Puerto Morelos station in both directions as part of the third phase of the Maya Train inauguration.
This means of rail transportation, he said, will have the capacity to transport 2,210 people through the available four-car trains designed for 221 passengers.
The comprehensive project covers the link between stations and strategic tourist arrival places such as the Cancun International Airport, bus terminals and tourist sites, so starting March 4, electric vehicles will be incorporated that will allow the transfer of visitors to the Mayan Train facilities.
In addition, it contemplates connectivity between archaeological zones as a result of the coordinated work with the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) so that tourists can visit places such as El Meco, San Miguelito, El Rey, as well as the Paamul II Corridor and the Cueva de las Manitas.
“What we want is for them to travel the train and discover the wonders of the south of Quintana Roo, Campeche, Chiapas, Tabasco, Yucatan, and then also Cancun, because there are millions of people who visit this region of the country and more arrive, much more,” he said.
Tickets are being made available at a discount for some. In tourist class, special tickets aimed at older adults, people with disabilities and students will cost 79 pesos, while the local population can purchase them for 99 pesos.
National tourists may opt for tourist or premier class which cost 148 pesos and 236 pesos, respectively. International visitors will access both types of service for 197 pesos, equivalent to $11.50 USD or premier class for $18.50 USD (315 pesos) from Cancun to Playa del Carmen and vice versa.
There will be ticket sales at the stations that make up the Cancun Airport, Puerto Morelos and Playa del Carmen route. While Tren Maya authorities have been promoting travel along the newly opened Cancun-Playa del Carmen route, purchasing tickets online for this section is not yet included as an option on the website.
