Chetumal, Q.R. — Residents of Chetumal are raising their voices after nearly two days without electricity. People who live in the city’s Caribe subdivision have spent nearly two days without power.
Repeated calls to the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) have resulted in only temporary solutions. Residents are angry due to the visible poor condition of the lines. After two days of continual blackouts, people began posting video on social media of the deplorable conditions of the power lines while expressing their frustration at the lack of CFE response.
Earlier this week, a short circuit at the intersection of Laguna de Bacalar Street and Andrés Quintana Roo Avenue was videoed after cables generated sparks. However, it was the power failure over the long weekend that was considered the ‘straw that broke the camel’s back’.
Raúl Andrade Angulo, President of the Association of Hoteliers of the Central and Southern region, said the blackout problems have been ongoing for two years.
“This weekend was the straw that broke the camel’s back was the power cut we suffered on Boulevard Bahía in the middle of the national holidays. The situation is already unsustainable because now we even have to worry about whether we are going to suffer a blackout at night without warning,” he said.
According to Andrade Angulo, tourists have canceled their reservations due to the power outages, which, he says is understandable since they are paying for a comfortable stay.
He says the Association is analyzing options due to the constant power outages which have caused them millions in losses over the last two years. One of those options is to negotiate with authorities for the granting of credits to acquire industrial power generators in order not to depend on CFE-supplied electricity.
