Thunderstorms and heavy rain forecast for Yucatan Peninsula with the arrival of cold front

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Thunderstorms are forecast to hit the region Sunday night with the arrival of a cold front. Mexico’s Servicio Meteorológico Nacional (SMN) says cold front no. 24 will begin to affect the Yucatan Peninsula Sunday night as it nears.

Heavy rain is expected around the Yucatan Peninsula, including Quintana Roo, on Monday as the cold U.S. air enters the tropical region. Strong winds are also forecast to accompany the cold air which is likely to stick around until Wednesday.

“Cold front No. 24  will move over the east and southeast of the country then reach the Yucatan Peninsula where it will interact with the subtropical jet stream, causing heavy to very heavy rains,” they said.

“The arctic air mass associated with the front will maintain the cold with a drop in temperatures in the northern and northeastern states of Mexico, with a freezing environment in the mountains of Chihuahua, Durango and Coahuila.

“In turn, the very strong “Norte” event will persist with gusts of 70 to 90 kms/h and waves of 2 to 4 meters high in Tamaulipas, Veracruz, the isthmus and the Gulf of Tehuantepec.

“Gusts of 50 to 70 kms/h are expected in Tabasco, Campeche, and the Yucatan,” the SMN reported. Between 25 to 50 mms of rain is expected in Tabasco, Yucatan and Quintana Roo.
