Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Dozens of people were left floating in an underground river at a Riviera Maya theme park Monday. Theme park visitors at Xplor in Riviera Maya were left floating when an exit door was unable to open due to a brief power outage.

According to Grupo Xcaret who owns the Xplor theme park, there was a temporary power outage in one of their artificially lit caverns.
The June 30 outage had municipal authorities at the scene in response to a social media post reportedly made by a trapped visitor. Grupo Xcaret noted that the presence of authorities at the park was due to a social media alert containing false information taken out of context.
After confirming that there was no event to attend to, such as a rescue or injured people as had been suspected, personnel withdrew.

According to preliminary reports, the power failure occurred around 1:00 p.m. while visitors were inside the water tunnel, preventing them from exiting. Park staff activated safety protocols and managed to evacuate all visitors with no injuries reported.
Xcaret emphasized that the situation was immediately addressed and activities resumed as normal, reiterating that they have maximum safety and supervision protocols in place.

A municipal government source confirmed that after a review, no additional emergency response was necessary. Alarming reports circulated on social media, prompting emergency services to arrive at the scene, although they confirmed the situation had already been brought under control.
It is not clear if the power outage was widespread or just within the park itself.
