The town of Puerto Morelos extends green agenda with public information banners

Puerto Morelos, Q.R. — The town of Puerto Morelos has extended its green agenda with public information banners. The banners have been installed in the sand along the town’s beaches.

The Directorate of the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat) along with personnel from the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas (Conanp) installed the banners with information for the care and conservation of the flora and fauna.

The installation is part of Mayor Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz’s environmental conservation actions attached to the Green Agenda Axis of her government plan, which includes the sustainability and ecological protection of Puerto Morelos.

Gerardo Rosas, the Director of the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat) of Puerto Morelos, announced the coordinated work being carried out with Conanp for the protection of the Puerto Morelos Reef National Marine Park.

He says it is a preservation area for the species under study and, of course, a very important tourist attraction for this destination.

“We are distributing information banners aimed at the general public with recommendations on how not to harm the flora and fauna of this protected natural area, which we have the privilege of visiting and where we can study the marine world,” he said.

Gerardo Rosas explained that together with the municipal secretary of Environment, Animal Welfare and Sustainable Mobility, Aimée Regina Rodríguez Vivas, seven informative banners were delivered to Conanp which were installed on the busiest beaches.

He says the informative banners have been distributed on Playa Sol, Ventana al Mar and Cayuse, at the entrance on Adolfo López Mateos Street.

The messages detail the prohibition of using harpoons and nets within the Marine Park, avoiding the application of sunscreen or suntan lotion if entering the water within the protected natural area, not damaging the ecosystems, not touching the corals in the reef area and to not swim outside the buoy area.

In early February, the municipality of Puerto Morelos said they were working toward sustainable tourism practices to conserve its natural assets. José de Jesús Espinosa Payán, the General Secretary of the City Council said at the time that it was urgent to implement responsible tourism practices that not only promote the local economy, but also care for and respect the ecosystems of Puerto Morelos.
