Texans account for 15 percent of all U.S. travelers into Cancun, Riviera Maya

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Governor Mara Lezama held a working meeting in Houston with the Consul of Mexico, Maria Elena Orantes Lopez. The pair focused on strengthening tourism promotion in the Mexican Caribbean and boosting the Financial District.

Lezama made the trip Wednesday to promote Quintana Roo to Texas travelers who make up 15 percent of Americans who vacation in the state. Lezama said during the meeting, she focused on the importance of consolidating Quintana Roo’s presence in Texas.

According to Lezama, last year, 1.1 Texans visited the Mexican Caribbean, a figure that represented 15.4 percent of the U.S. market. She said Dallas and Houston consolidated their position as the main cities sending tourists to Quintana Roo.

She also pointed out that the cities of Austin and San Antonio showed significant growth in the flow of travelers to the Mexican Caribbean during 2025.

The Wednesday meeting focused on strengthening the promotion of the Mexican Caribbean as well as institutional and economic ties, discussing energy matter issues related to the up-and-coming new Financial District of Cancun.

Consul Maria Elena Orantes Lopez highlighted that the more than 2.2 million Mexicans living in Texas consider Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean to be one of their main points of reference for Mexico due to its international tourist positioning, connectivity and proximity.

The Texas tour was made ahead of the 2026 World Cup, of which Houston is a host city. Lezama said being a host city represents a strategic platform to strengthen alliances and promote joint actions that allow more visitors to discover the Mexican Caribbean destinations.
