Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Temperatures around the state have recorded a significant drop with the arrival of an arctic air mass. As predicted, the blast of incoming cold air began entering the warm topical regions of the Yucatan Peninsula Monday.
A majority of the state experienced rain and strong winds as the arctic air pushed its way into the region. The cold front, number 13, left areas in the center and south to wake up to mid-teen temperatures Tuesday.
In Tulum, Civil Protection reported a wake up temperature of 17C (62F), while the central area around the town of Coba recorded 15C (59F). In Cancun, wake-up temperatures were only slightly better at 19C (66F).
While Tuesday is expected to remain cool, it is Tuesday night and Wednesday morning that meteorologists are warning about the full effect of the cold air.
For the next 24 hours, Civil Protection says for the municipality of Tulum, the cool air and winds will continue with an even further drop in temeperatures expected for Tuesday night.

“Today, Tuesday, after the arrival of cold front number 13, the influence of its colder and drier air mass is now expected. Therefore, a cloudy, mild (even during the day), and windy environment will prevail.
“During the night and at dawn tomorrow, we expect a significant drop in temperature, resulting in cool to cold conditions. It is recommended to dress warmly, as the windy and cool conditions increase the risk of respiratory illnesses.

“It is highly likely that ports will remain closed to navigation today, and that red flags will persist in beach areas.”
Several ports have been closed to small vessels due to the strong winds. On Tuesday morning, authorities issued a nautical notice based on the information issued by the Port Authoritiy.
Weather Conditions and Operational Status of Puerto Juárez/Cancún: According to meteorological bulletin GOLF-05-111125, the port is closed to general navigation.

Therefore, it is recommended to stay attentive to the dissemination of meteorological reports and nautical warnings issued by this National Maritime Authority via VHF radio channel 16.

For today, Mexico’s National Meteorological Service (SMN) says “the arctic air mass associated with cold front 13 will maintain cold to very cold conditions in the north, northeast, east, and central regions of Mexico, with freezing temperatures and frost at dawn in the mountainous areas of Durango and Chihuahua.

“Additionally, a strong northerly wind event will continue, along with high waves and gusts of 90 to 110 km/h in the Isthmus and Gulf of Tehuantepec (Oaxaca and Chiapas), and gusts of 50 to 70 km/h along the coasts of southern Veracruz, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán and Quintana Roo, diminishing during the afternoon.”
