Suspects in murder of Cancun taxi driver sentenced to 20 years

Cancun, Q.R. — Two suspects in the 2024 murder of a Cancun taxi driver have been sentenced to 20 years. The pair were each handed a 20 year sentence during an oral trial hearing Friday.

Authorities say David Solorio Martínez and Jibran Guadalupe Bustos Galeana for found gulity “for the crime of aggravated homicide committed against a male.”

In a staement, they said “the events for which these people will spend two decades in prison occurred on February 3, 2024, when, in the company of accomplices, they transported the victim to his home on Costa Maya Avenue.

“Subsequently, they all entered the residence together, where David Solorio Martínez and two other accomplices subdued the man and took him to a bedroom. There, a teenager pulled out a firearm and shot him, leaving his lifeless body on the bed.

“After the incident, David Solorio Martínez ordered Jibran Guadalupe Bustos Galeana to ransack the victim’s home in order to simulate a robbery. It should be mentioned that those identified were members of a criminal group that controlled the taxi stand in the Continental Zone of the municipality of Isla Mujeres.”

Police said “the motive for the crime was the theft and appropriation of the vehicles registered as taxis that were in the victim’s possession.

“The now-convicted individuals intended to force him to relinquish ownership of these vehicles in order to obtain financial gain and subsequently use them to commit various criminal acts.”
