Suspect accused of aggravated extortion of Tulum business arrested walking PDC streets

Tulum, Q.R. — A suspect accused of aggravated extortion in Tulum has been ordered to remain jailed during his hearing. The State Attorney General (FGE) said Alex “N” is being investigated for the October 16 extortion attempt of a Tulum business.

According to an FGE statement, Alex “N” went to a business located north of Tulum along the federal highway with a bullet and a note in-hand. There, he demanded 30,000 pesos a month in protection money.

Alex “N” was arrested following a legal complaint that was filed by the company. Police arrested Alex “N” while he was walking on a street in Playa del Carmen.

Police said Alex “N” attempted to extort a Tulum business on October 16 “when he went to the parking lot of a business located at kilometer 239 of Federal Highway 307, on the stretch between Playa del Carmen and Tulum. There, he approached an employee and handed him a bullet along with an extortion note, demanding a monthly payment of 30,000 pesos for “protection money.”

“As a result of the complaint, this Public Prosecutor’s Office requested and obtained from a judge the arrest warrant against the investigated party, which was fulfilled on Zapote Street between Ceiba and Caoba in the Misión Villamar subdivision in the municipality of Playa del Carmen.”
