Chetumal, Q.R. — A dog found with her snout full of porcupine quills is on the mend. The female street dog was seen this week sitting in a university campus green area with a face full of barbed hairs.

Personnel from the Othón P. Blanco municipal health department and volunteer rescuers were able to locate the dog and cage her and her puppies. She was found with a new litter of puppies and was defending them when she went after the animal and ended up with a face full of quills.
According to Mayor Yensunni Martínez, the dog and her puppies were rescued and provided with immediate veterinary care. Both the dog and her litter were found suffering from malnutrition and dehydration.
Two veterinarians removed the quills from the dog’s snout who is now recovering with her litter at the Chetumal Canine and Feline Care Centre. Once recovered, Chetumal City Hall says they will be put up for adoption.
“Thanks to our municipal Health Department and with the support of independent rescuers, we rescued a dog and her puppies from the Bahía of Chetumal University.

“The dog had injuries accidentally caused by a porcupine, so she was provided immediate veterinary care, following the instructions of Mayor Yensunni Martínez.
“The dog is now sheltered at the Chetumal Canine and Feline Care Center where she is receiving the necessary treatment, food and care.

“Her puppies will remain in a temporary home for the duration of the mother’s treatment. They will then be vaccinated, dewormed and placed up for responsible adoption,” City Hall said in an official statement.
