Stealing cable from Maya Train gets Bacalar man over 3 years in prison

Bacalar, Q.R. — A man found guilty of stealing cable from a section of Maya Train has been sentenced to over three years. The man police have identified as Edilberto “N” was sentenced in a Cancun court last week.

According to the Attorney General of the Republic (FGR), Edilberto “N” was found in possession of 43 kilos of copper he had stripped from over 53 meters of cable belonging to the federal government project.

The Fiscalía General de la República (FGR) said Edilberto “N” was found guilty of robbery for stealing the operating cable from the Limones-Bacalar section of Tren Maya.

Police said he was detained by National Guard in the vicinity of kilometer 1140, section 6 Limones – Bacalar, in the state of Quintana Roo., but did not say when he was arrested.

He was traveling on a motorcycle and carrying a bag where inside, authorities located 53 meters and four centimeters of copper cable.

The copper, they said, had an approximate weight of 43 kilos that belonged to section 6 of the Maya Train. Since the project is federal, the Bacalar man was referred to the Federal Prosecutor’s Office in Cancun for his trial.

He was found guilty of theft and sentenced to three years and three months in prison. He will also have to pay reparation damages in the amount of 56,291 pesos.

On January 29, police searched several scrap yard businesses in Chetumal after operating cables were taken from a Maya Train line. The stolen live-line cables left section seven of Tren Maya in the Xul-Ha region inoperable.
