Riviera Maya, Q.R. — The Urban Development Commission of the Quintana Roo Congress continues to work to regularize the state’s irregular settlements. Yohanet Torres Muñoz, President of the Commission, says there are hundreds of irregular human colonies around the state.
While they know of 28 in the municipality of Solidaridad in surrounding areas of Playa del Carmen, it is Cancun with the largest figure. Deputy Torres Muñoz says there are at least 280 irregular settlements in the municipality of Benito Juarez (Cancun).
Torres Muñoz did not provide population figures on those settlements, but says those living on the land are doing so without legal certainty. She also noted that these irregular colonies of people make public and private investment difficult.
“An official list of regular human settlements is necessary to guarantee investment and prevent people from falling into fraud like the case of Las Torres de la CFE in Playa del Carmen,” said Torres Muñoz.
The Deputy added that the regularization of these irregular settlements will be carried out through the reform of the State Urban Development Law which was approved in 2023.
“This task is complex due to the continuous growth in Quintana Roo, but it is necessary to provide legal certainty to the families who live in these settlements,” she said.
The issue of irregular settlements also extends to the far south in Mahahual where, in November, the Agencia de Proyectos Estratégicos del Gobierno de Quintana Roo (Agepro) began to work on a project to designate land for that purpose.
In January of this year, Agepro announced that last year, they signed 243 contracts for the regularization of land in Tulum and in Maya Balam and Kuchumatán in the municipality of Bacalar.
