State spends 31 million outfitting Cancun police with high-res bodycams

Cancun, Q.R. — Cancun police have been outfitted with body cameras. On Tuesday, Governor Mara Lezama and Cancun Mayor Ana Paty Peralta deliver 725 body cameras. The mini cameras were delivered to elements of the Municipal Secretariat of Citizen Security and Transit of Benito Juárez (SMSCyT) to strengthen security and make police operations more transparent.

While participating in the delivery of the body cameras, Governor Lezama said this now means police have better tools, that citizens have more confidence in the police and that practices that are so damaging to security are being eradicated.

“There can be no isolated efforts here. We are all doing our part in this shared responsibility, from the municipality to the state, with the support of President Claudia Sheinbaum who always stands by us in this great task,” said Mara Lezama.

Jaime Padilla Barrientos, who heads the SMSCyT, emphasized that the delivery of body cameras also demonstrates that security is built as a team, among all of us.

The new police body cameras record audio and visual in 2K resolution and for up to 12 hours. The cameras cost the state 31 million pesos.

“The investment of more than 31 million pesos will allow the police to document their actions in audio and video, reinforcing protocols and transparency,” Lezama reported Tuesday.
