Riviera Maya, Q.R. — The government of Quintana Roo has purchased two sargassum vessels for shallow at-sea collection. The vessels will be reserved for use in shallow waters where the Marina vessels cannot travel.
Vice Admiral Marco Antonio Muñoz Hernández reported that the Quintana Roo state government purchased the two sargassum at-sea harvesting vessels to operate in areas where their vessels cannot due to their greater draft.
He says the two harvesting boats will be used in shallow waters off the coast in areas between Tulum and Xcalak. He explained that the vessels are ideal for areas such as Mahahual where the reef lagoon did not allow for optimal operation of their boats, which are suitable for deeper waters.
Muñoz Hernández says the addition of the two state vessels will help improve the efficiency of macroalgae extraction at sea. These vessels will replace three Marina vessels that were unable to operate efficiently due to their draft.

He says those vessels have already been assigned for at-sea collection off the coast of Tulum.
