Lázaro Cárdenas, Q.R. — The state continues talks with ejidos to add an official road between Lázaro Cárdenas and Playa del Carmen. The 13 kilometer-long road would be paved by the state to connect the two municipalities.
State Secretary Cristina Torres Gómez says she is in talks with ejidos in Lázaro Cárdenas to obtain the rights to their section of the road. She said the 13.2 kilometer-long road connects the two municipalities, however, the state wants to pave it so it can become a new communication route.
She reports of the total 13.2 kilometers, 6.2 kilometers are located within the Playa del Carmen ejido starting from the extension of Avenida Juárez. She says the entire road needs to be handed over to the state in an agreement by the assembly.
“It’s one thing for the ejidos, in this case Playa del Carmen and Héroe de Nacozari, to say they agree, but it’s quite another for it to be approved by an assembly. In order to carry out the work, we need the assembly’s approval.
“Similar situations have occurred in the past where the ejidos expressed their agreement but failed to do so in the assembly, resulting in compensation payments,” she explained.
By agreeing to hand over the land, the state will be able to pave the road, making it an official communication route between the two municipalities. Their agreeance is vital to the outcome of the project since the state government does not have sufficient resources for these types of projects.
However, if an agreement cannot be reached, the state of Quintana Roo could reach out to the federal government for funding, she said, noting that funding is not guaranteed.

If an agreement can be reached with the state and the ejidos, the paved road would provide access to at least 10 Lázaro Cárdenas-Playa del Carmen communities. It was these communities, she said, that initiated state intervention since the communities want to move forward with tourism projects.
