Riviera Maya, Q.R. — The National Civil Protection Meeting on “2026 Forest Fires” kicked off with great success. The kickoff was held at the Tijuana Metropolitan Convention Center in Baja California February 9.

Participants from the Quintana Roo State Civil Protection Coordination (COEPROC) attended the meeting, which lasted two days. The state was led by its head, Guillermo Núñez Leal, as well as representatives from various municipalities.

The goal was to exchange strategies and strengthen knowledge about firefighting in preparation for the upcoming 2026 forest fire season.

The opening ceremony was presided over by Laura Velázquez Alzúa, National Coordinator of Civil Protection of the Government of Mexico.

During her, she thanked representatives of the 32 states for their attending. She gave a special acknowledgement to President Claudia Sheinbaum for her support and leadership.

During the meeting, Guillermo Núñez Leal commented “We know that prevention is key. Governor Mara Lezama places special emphasis on the training and preparation of emergency teams with the firm purpose of safeguarding life, property and providing a better development for families in Quintana Roo.”

More than 1,500 members of the national, state and municipal Civil Protection systems across the country participated. This year, Quintana Roo municipal directors of Civil Protection from Tulum, Playa del Carmen, Isla Mujeres and Cozumel also participated.

“It is thanks to our governor Mara Lezama that in Quintana Roo the vision is clear. To continue preparing and working through the coordination of the three levels of government to optimize efforts and preserve our ecosystems,” said Núñez Leal.

Civil Protection personnel will also participate in workshops that will be given to emergency teams, strengthening knowledge through specialized training from the National Civil Protection System.

The objective is to strengthen inter-institutional coordination between agencies to establish strategies that allow the prevention of forest fires, define combat programs and provide attention to protected natural areas during the 2026 season.

Through preparation, training and prevention, it is hoped that this 2026 Fire Season will see a reduction in the number of fires with the help of tools such as early fire detection, monitoring and early warning, as well as rapid and coordinated attack among federal, state, municipal and volunteer forces.
