Sparks from overhead power lines cause vehicle fire in Cancun

Cancun, Q.R. — Authorities say sparks from a CFE transformer were responsible for a weekend fire that left two cars burned. Cancun firemen were sent to an address in SM 228 in response to resident 9-1-1 reports of a ground fire.

At the scene, firemen located two burning vehicles. The incident happened in the middle of the night in street parked vehicles on Kabah Avenue. The SSC (Secretary of Citizen Security) reported that the fire due started by overhead sparks due to a short circuit.

“Fire caused by short circuit in Cancun. No injuries. The Quintana Roo Secretariat of Citizen Security reports that following a report received through 911, a vehicle fire was responded to early Sunday morning in Superblock 228 of Cancun.

“The fire was caused by a short circuit.

“Firefighters responded immediately, extinguishing the blaze and bringing the situation under control. The incident resulted only in property damage; no injuries were reported.

“According to initial findings, the fire originated from sparks in high-voltage power lines on a utility pole. These sparks ignited tires stored in the area and subsequently spread to the vehicle.

“The emergency was handled without posing a risk to the public. Residents are encouraged to report any incidents to 911,” the SSC (Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana) said.
