Smell of pot leads patrolling police to Tulum taxi

Tulum, Q.R. — A Tulum taxi driver found in possession of nearly 11 kilos of pot has been arrested along with a alleged dealer. The pair were taken into custody after a patrol car heading in their direction smelled marijuana.

Police said when the smell caught their attention, they saw two men inside a taxi handling a red container they later found was a source of the smell. Both men were arrested on Sol Poniente Street in central Tulum after police found additional drugs during an inspection of the vehicle.

Aside from the 20 large bags of marijuana weighing 10.9 kilos, police also reported finding over 200 street-ready doses of crack cocaine and a brick of 2C-B. The SSC (Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana) of Quintana Roo said Alex Noe “N” and Gilberto del Ángel “N” were arrested as suspects in drug-related offenses.

They were taken into custody Wednesday by members of the Mexican Navy, the Army (Defensamx) and Municipal Police.

“Officers from the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC), while on patrol, noticed a parked white taxi with red stripes. Two people were inside, and a strong odor of marijuana was detected emanating from the vehicle,” they reported.

“Upon approaching police observed a red cylinder, taped at one end. The top of the cylinder had no lid or connecting fittings, and a small amount of transparent synthetic material protruded from it. A green, leafy substance was visible inside,” they added.

“The incident occurred on Sol Poniente Street, between Acuario Sur and Júpiter Sur Streets, in the Centro neighborhood of Tulum. A search of the vehicle was then conducted.

“The following items were seized: eight large transparent packages labeled “Chocolob” containing a green plant material resembling marijuana, four large transparent packages labeled “Honey”, three large transparent packages labeled “Gorilla”, two large transparent packages labeled “Yara”, one large transparent package with a devil print, one large transparent package labeled “Fresa” and one large transparent package labeled “Biscott,” all containing the same narcotic,” they detailed.

“In addition, 248 small ziploc-type bags with a black and white print containing solid fragments resembling crack cocaine, and a brick-shaped container wrapped in clear plastic with pink fragments resembling 2C-B (tusi). Also seized was a red cylinder labeled “Evans Hydra Smart,” wrapped in tan tape and a white Nissan Sentra with red stripes and Quintana Roo license plates.”
