Puerto Morelos, Q.R. — The Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT) has presented its plans for an overpass. The overpass project is set for construction along the federal 307 north of the town of Puerto Morelos.

The SICT (Secretaría de Infraestructura, Comunicaciones y Transportes) is also working on a second project to widen the 180. The SICT plans to widen the highway including the section that passes through Leona Vicario.
For the 307, they are working on a project to build an overpass at the entrance to Bahía Petempich in order to facilitate crossing and joining of that road. Both infrastructure projects will address mobility problems, improve connectivity and increase driving safety.
Puerto Morelos Mayor Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz announced that among the infrastructure projects of the federal agency, there is one for each of the two federal highways that cross the municipality of Puerto Morelos.
Municipal officials met with the SICT Saturday who presented the projects to align with the vision and resources of the federal, state and municipal governments, as well as promote balanced development.
“In the case of federal highway 180, the plan is to widen and modernize it from the exit to Cancun to the borders with Yucatan, which includes the section that passes through Leona Vicario, that is, from kilometer 272 to 278,” stated Blanca Merari.

In this context, she emphasized that this led to the decision to postpone the sidewalk construction program in Leona Vicario until next year. She said the decision was made “because if it had been carried out, the SICT project would have forced them to be demolished, affecting the investment.”
Blanca Merari explained that “for the 307 highway, the SICT developed a project to build an overpass at the entrance to Bahía Petempich in order to facilitate crossing and merging onto that road.
“However, the management of its execution will be the responsibility of the municipal administration,” she noted.

Blanca Merari indicated that with the construction of this infrastructure, which is considered a priority, the aim is not only to improve connectivity, but also to promote socioeconomic development and, above all, to increase safety for the people of Puerto Morelos.
Mario Salinas Castro, the Secretary of Public Works of Puerto Morelos, said that during the SICT meeting, priority issues of the municipality in terms of infrastructure were analyzed.

He agrees that including Leona Vicario in the expansion of Federal Highway 180 would decongest traffic, improve connectivity and raise safety standards, while the overpass in Bahía Petempich would solve crucial mobility problems and expedite traffic flow on one of Quintana Roo’s most important arteries, benefiting both tourists and the local population.
Salinas Castro says these project will promote the modernization of the state and municipal highway infrastructure, facilitate connectivity between tourist destinations in Quintana Roo and support the growth of the tourism sector, the economic axis of the state.
