Bacalar, Q.R. — The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) has authorized the expansion of the North Coastal Highway. The municipality project has been approved for the addition of 10 kilometers that will be constructed 100 meters from the lagoon shore.
According to information from the federal agency, the two-lane North Coast highway for the Bacalar Lagoon was authorized after four years of processing. The expansion project has been promoted by the federal government’s Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transportation (SICT).
The Secretaría de Infraestructura, Comunicaciones y Transportes (SICT) submitted approval for the project in December of 2020, but had it put on hold in June 2022. A new evaluation was conducted in May of this year that saw the project finally approved.

It will also have connecting access points to the federal 307 highway. According to the SICT, the projected cost for the 10 kilometer long expansion is approximately 65 million pesos.
