SICT announces start of new bridge over geological fault between PDC and Puerto Morelos

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — The Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT) has announced the start of a vehicular bridge. The bridge is set for construction over the geological fault on the federal highway between Playa del Carmen and Puerto Morelos.

A permanent solution to the massive sinkhole problem has been in the works since August of 2015 when the road opened overnight. One vehicle fell into in the hole that suddenly appeared without warning. The driver survived.

Traffic was paralyzed for nearly an entire day after the massive sinkhole left that section of highway impassable. Crews were forced to create a diverted road around the fault. To date, authorities have not come up with a permanent solution.

The Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT) reported that as part of the National Highway Infrastructure Program, 300 million pesos will be allocated for the construction of a 400-meter-long bridge that will cross the affected area between kilometers 303.5 and 311.9 of highway 307.

The SICT said the Riviera Maya project is part of a total of 12.95 billion pesos that will be distributed for similar projects in 10 states. Those states include Mexico City, Colima, Veracruz, Tlaxcala, Nayarit, Sinaloa, Morelos, Baja California Sur, Querétaro and Quintana Roo.

According to the federal government, overpass bridge construction near Playa el Paraiso is set to begin sometime in June. The project is scheduled for completion in 2026 with an estimated construction time of 12 months from the formal start date. According to the SCIT, the bridge will generate more than 2,190 local jobs.
