SICT announces highway expansion project that will interconnect entire Yucatan Peninsula

Chetumal, Q.R. — The Secretary of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT) says around 11 billion will be spent on a highway expansion project. The project includes expanding the Villahermosa-Chetumal highway which will interconnect the entire Yucatan Peninsula.

At the start of construction on the expansion of the Macuspana-Escárcega section of the project, Jesús Antonio Esteva Medina, Secretaría de Infraestructura, Comunicaciones y Transportes, stated that with an investment of 11.197 billion pesos , 300 kilometers will be modernized.

In a ceremony led by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, the head of the SICT announced that the project will consist of expanding 130 kilometers of highway to four lanes and maintaining 170 kilometers of road in the states of Tabasco, Campeche and Chiapas.

He stated that the Macuspana-Escárcega section is the first priority project to be completed during this administration, so today is a symbolic day for the SICT team and road workers.

“In the coming weeks, eight of these main axes will be launched across the country,” he said.

The head of the SICT indicated that in the first stage in 2025, work will be carried out on 16 kilometers of the Macuspana-Escárcega section, with an investment of 1.5 billion pesos. Another 12 kilometers in Tabasco belonging to the Macuspana-Ocaña section and in Campeche, 4 kilometers of the Escárcega-José de la Cruz section.

He explained that work will begin this month in Tabasco with three simultaneous work fronts, each 4 km long, stretching from Macuspana to Gregorio Méndez, from Gregorio Méndez to Abasolo, and from Abasolo to Ocaña.

The project will include the repair of two vehicle bridges, four underpasses, and three return routes. In 2026, 38 kilometers will be completed. In 2027, another 38 kilometers will be finished with an official completion date for 2028.

He highlighted “the very important connection with the southeast of the country and, to the north, to the coastal area, the Gulf Corridor and the trunk roads. So, this connection becomes very important since it goes all the way to Chetumal, interconnecting the entire Yucatan Peninsula,” he explained.
