Mexico City, Mexico — President Claudia Sheinbaum says she will return to the Yucatan Peninsula for the opening of section 7 of the Maya Train. Sheinbaum says she will return to the region to inaugurate the section from Palenque to Chetumal next week.
The President also announced that in 2025 and 2026, the necessary work will be started on intermodal spaces so that the Maya Train can be used to transport cargo.
During a morning press conference, Sheinbaum reported that she will inaugurate the section of Palenque to Chetumal Maya Train on December 15. She says that section remains pending from the previous term of Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
This section passes through Chiapas, Campeche and Quintana Roo and will close the Maya Train circuit.
During her morning press conference at the National Palace, the President confirmed that that the Maya Train will also be a cargo train, for which the necessary work will be carried out over the next two years.
“The Maya Train, in addition to being a passenger train, will be a cargo train. In the next two years, 2025 and 2026, all the necessary work will be done on intermodal spaces, everything that is required for it to be a cargo train,” she said.
“The Maya Train is now operating for passengers. It will have a line from Palenque to Chetumal, which we are going to inaugurate. Tickets will begin to be sold so that it can go all the way around the Peninsula as planned and next year, the cargo work will begin,” she explained.
Last month, Sheinbaum announced the start of studies for the construction of cargo tracks to connect Tren Maya as a transport route. The project is forecast to cost 35 billion pesos.
