Sheinbaum corrects Trump’s interpretation of Mexico-U.S. border migration conversation

Mexico City, Mexico — Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum and U.S. president-elect Donald Trump had a phone conversation Wednesday. The two talked after Sheinbaum reacted to Trump’s tariffs threat earlier in the week.

After the phone call, President Sheinbaum referred to the conversation as “excellent” while Trump called it “wonderful”. Sheinbaum shared her conversation with Trump via a short social media post.

“I had an excellent conversation with president Donald Trump. We discussed Mexico’s strategy on the migration phenomenon and I shared that caravans are not arriving at the northern border because they are being taken care of in Mexico.

“We also discussed strengthening collaboration on security issues within the framework of our sovereignty and the campaign we are carrying out in the country to prevent the consumption of fentanyl,” she posted Wednesday afternoon.

Trump also made a social media post regarding the Wednesday afternoon chat saying, “Just had a wonderful conversation with the new President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo. She agreed to stop migration through Mexico, and into the United States, effectively closing our Southern Border.

“We also talked about what can be done to stop the massive flow of drugs into the United States and also, the consumption of these drugs. It was a very productive conversation!”

He later added that “Mexico will stop people from going to our Southern Border, effective immediately. THIS WILL GO A LONG WAY TOWARD STOPPING THE ILLGAL INVASION OF THE USA. Thank you!!!”

On Wednesday evening, Sheinbaum corrected Trump’s interpretation of their conversation clarifying there will be no closing of borders.

“In our conversation with president Trump, I explained to him the comprehensive strategy that Mexico has followed to address the migration phenomenon, respecting human rights. Thanks to this migrants and caravans are assisted before they reach the border. We reiterate that Mexico’s position is not to close borders but to build bridges between governments and between peoples.”
