Several communities gather in protest outside José María Morelos CFE office

José María Morelos, Q.R. — Since Monday morning, residents of communities in the Sabán area have been outside the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) office. The group of around 40 people are demanding the removal of the current José María Morelos office manager as well as a permanent solution to their ongoing power problems.

Area residents from San Juan Oriente, Sacalaca, San Felipe Oriente, Sabán and Huay Max say they are still without power since the passing of Hurricane Beryl Friday.

Gabriel Alonso Horán, a resident of San Juan Oriente, said they have padlocked the gate so CFE personnel cannot enter until they have their services restored.

Juan Alonso Horan, also a resident of San Juan Oriente, said they came to demand that service be restored and that the area under the power lines be cleared since they interfer with the lines. He also said they are demanding the current CFE office manager be dismissed “because he is not solving anything.”

Alonso Horan says as long as CFE does not comply, the group will not leave.

He said they are done being “played as fools” since two years ago they were told the area under the power lines would be cleared. To date, that has not happened.

He said that all the towns in the Sabán area are participating in the movement against the Federal Electricity Commission. Some are even blocking a part of the Dziuché-Tihosuco state highway to ask the CFE to reestablish their service that failed Friday.
