Riviera Maya, Q.R. — After a 24 hour rain-break, meteorologists say another wet few days are in store for the Yucatan Peninsula. The National Meteorological Service (SMN) says scattered heavy rains are expected in areas of Michoacan, Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche and Quintana Roo.
On Thursday, cold front 20 entered northeastern Mexico causing strong wind gusts in Coahuila, Nuevo León and Tamaulipas.
At the same time, low-pressure troughs over central and southeastern Mexico, combined with moisture from the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico and atmospheric instability, are expected to cause rain in western, central, eastern, southern and southeastern Mexico, including the Yucatan Peninsula.

The Servicio Meteorológico Nacional (SMN) says locally heavy rainfall in central Michoacan, eastern Chiapas, central and eastern Tabasco, eastern Campeche and central and southern Quintana Roo is expected for Friday.
The Yucatan Peninsula will see between 25 and 50mm of rain starting Friday afternoon. Lighter rainfall in the form of thunderstorms are forecast across the peninsula, including Quintana Roo, for Saturday and Sunday.
On Thursday afternoon, Quintana Roo State Civil Protection posted “this weekend, periods of showers with locally heavy rainfall (accumulations of 25 to 50 mm) accompanied by lightning are expected in the municipalities of the state, primarily in Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Tulum, Playa del Carmen, Cozumel, Puerto Morelos, Benito Juárez (Cancun), Isla Mujeres, and Lázaro Cárdenas.

“TAKE PRECAUTIONS. Follow the instructions of the Civil Protection agency in your municipality. These rains may cause flooding in low-lying areas. Check with the Port Captain’s office regarding permitted activities at sea.”
The SMN reports that on Sunday, a new approaching cold front, number 21, will make its way toward the peninsula.

It is expected to reach Quintana Roo for Monday. The arriving mass of polar air will create a drop in temperatures but not generate rain. Wind gusts associated with cold front 21 are not expected to affect Quintana Roo.
